Takata airbag recall

Actually, Takata airbag recall aims to replace Japanese supplier’s defective airbag inflators, which may explode causing sad consequences. The reason of the explosion is the ammonium nitrate. This chemical may explode because of heat and humidity. It may result in throwing metal fragments into vehicle occupants. Unfortunately, faulty airbag led to 11 deaths and about 180 injuries in the U.S. As a matter of fact, Takata airbag recall applies to the 2002-2015 vehicles of 19 car makers. The NHTSA refers to this recall as ‘’the largest and most complex in U.S. history.’’ It’s indeed so sad that the device which is meant to protect car occupants from in the event of accidents endangers their lives.

It was in May 2016, when Mazda issued a recall to replace faulty Takata airbag inflators of its vehicles. Here is the list of the vehicles affected by the recall: Mazda 6 of the model year 2009-2011, Mazda CX-7 of the model year 2004-2011, Mazda CX-9 of the model year 2007-2011. The list includes the following vehicles as well: Mazda CX-7 of the model year 2007-2008, Mazda CX-9 of the model year 2007-2008.

So, when the automaker ordered this recall, Mazda wanted to replace defective airbags with similar non-desiccated phase-stabilized ammonium nitrate. The car maker used them as replacement parts for a temporary fix. Since then, Mazda took significant efforts to get airbag replacement parts not for a temporary, but for a permanent use. So, the automaker achieved this goal. Currently, these replacement parts are available.

Additionally, Mazda says this recall is superseding the recall issued last year. It applies to the automaker’s vehicles, not fixed under the recall issued in May 2016. Furthermore, the vehicles fixed under the 2016 Takata airbag recall, need new airbag inflators as well. However, the automaker is going to include these vehicles in the future recall.
