Mazda Considers Expanding Takata Airbag Recall Nationwide

Takata Airbag Recall

The supplier Takata seems to still resist the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration’s (NHTSA) request to expand the Takata airbag recall nationwide. However, certain automakers have already started expanding their recall campaigns by adding more and more regions to the affected ones.

Honda has already expanded its airbag inflator recall nationwide. Now approximately 5.4 million vehicles will be covered under the recall. Mazda, too, considers expanding the airbag recall nationwide.

A Mazda spokesman told Reuters that there is no decision regarding the time when the expansion will be conducted. Besides, the automaker does not yet know how many vehicles will need repairs under the Takata airbag recall.

What Mazda did at the beginning of December was to expand the recall from 65,000 to an estimated 86,773 vehicles. The US recall campaign now affects the following vehicles:

  • Mazda6 Model-years 2003-2007
  • MazdaSpeed6 Model-years 2006-2007
  • Mazda RX-8 Model-years 2004-2008
  • MPV Model-years 2004-2005
  • B-Series pikcup Model-year 2004
