Toyota Motor Sales, USA Inc. is conducting a Toyota safety recall of nearly 112,500 vehicles. Affected are the following vehicles:
- 2,500 model-years 2012-2014 RAV4EV vehicles
- 110,000 model-year 2015 Camry, Camry Hybrid, Highlander, Highlander Hybrid, and model-years 2014-2015 RAV4 vehicles
The problem in RAV4EV models is that the part of the propulsion system called Electric Vehicle Traction Motor Assembly may make the vehicle shift to Neutral due to a software problem. If this occurs, a “Check EV System” warning message will appear on the instrument panel and the malfunction indicator lamp will turn on. The condition will increase the risk of a collision.
Owners of the affected vehicles will get recall notification letter from the manufacturer and the dealers will fix the problem for free.
The second group of vehicles is being recalled due to an issue with the circuit board for the electric power steering (EPS). It may be damaged during manufacturing. In such a situation, a loss of power steering assist may occur, increasing the risk of an accident.
Owners of the affected vehicles will also receive notifications from the manufacturer. Toyota dealers will inspect the affected vehicles and will replace the power steering electronic control unit free of charge.
